Say hello to Flick – Gesture control boards for Raspberry Pi, Pi Zero, and I2C devices

In partnership with our friends at ModMyPi, we’re excited to announce the launch of Flick! These are a range of three raspberry pi gesture control boards that allow you to control your Pi A+, B+, 2B, 3B, Pi Zero, or any I2C device from 15cm away with a Flick of the wrist!

Flick uses technology that enables the PCB to detect your gestures from up to 15cm away in 3D space. Draw a circle with your hand – Flick will track it. Here are all of the available gestures:

  • Swipe (east to west, west to east, north to south, south to north)
  • Tap and double tap (center, east, west, north, south)
  • Airwheel (clockwise, anti-clockwise)

Integrate Flick into your Raspberry Pi project to give you multiple ways of controlling it. Using the near field gesture technology, you’re able to hide your project behind non-conductive material (such as wood/acrylic) and still use Flick (please note however that mounting it in this way may reduce the sensor range).

We’ve designed the Flick range to be plug and play, allowing you to be up and running within minutes. Use our software libraries (complete with one line installer) to fully explore what you can do with Flick. Control your computer, TV, music system and more all with a Flick of the wrist!

Boards and Cases

Each of the boards has an optional case that fits a Raspberry Pi / Pi Zero perfectly. As you can see in the images below, there is also another configuration you can have on the HAT and pHAT case lids. The two piece lid can extend outwards, allowing you to have the Flick board in full view.

Please note: Flick will still work through the cases, even with the closed lid. However, mounting it in this way may reduce the sensor range.

Flick Zero & Case

Flick Zero is fully compatible with Pi Zero & Pi Zero W. It does also work with Raspberry Pi A+, B+, 2B, 3B and all other Raspberry Pis with 40 GPIO pins (or compatible boards). However, if you want to use this with a Raspberry Pi other than the Pi Zero, then we recommend the Flick HAT.

Flick HAT & Case

Flick HAT is fully compatible with Raspberry Pi A+, B+, 2B, 3B and all other Raspberry Pis with 40 GPIO pins. This board comes with all the same bells and whistles as the Flick Zero version.

  • Full software libraries (fully open-source code)
  • No soldering required
  • Gesture sensing up to 15cm

Flick Large & Case

Flick Large works in the same way as the other boards, except it’s much bigger 🙂 Measuring  14.8 cm x 10.4cm x 0.5cm, this beast-of-a-board has a substantially larger detection range in comparison the the Flick HAT and Zero version. It’s also compatible with Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, Arduino, Genuino or any I2C enabled device. Flick large comes with 1 x female-to-female jumper cable and 1 female-to-male jumper cable giving you flexibility on where you place your I2C device.

Fully open source code

In the spirit of the Raspberry Pi community, over the coming months, we’re going to be working on creating awesome Flick code and making it freely available to everyone :-). Projects, guides, and tutorials will be posted on our official GitHub page and also on our Maker Zone.
